Three new members joined – Anne Weber, Rebecca Hodge, Joan
Faoro. The Adobe
CS and CS2 processes - actions, filters, etc. presentation by David Porath,
who teaches Adobe CS and CS2 at Oakland University, was postponed because of
a software licensing problem. It will be rescheduled for February 6th. Kristi Zamora will be presenting on exhibition requirements and
know-how on March 6th. We all agreed that having a speaker or program one meeting a
month and competitions one meeting a month would be a good idea, but we
didn’t discuss when we would start and we don’t have a list of programs
scheduled, yet. Brian said he had
enough that he could do training for 3 separate meetings, and Bob DiTommaso
has training for at least one meeting. We discussed the digital Grand Prix. Only one or two
people don't use a digital. There was discussion about doing the Grand
Prix as a group at a pre-selected site on one day and having the cards all
downloaded onto someone's laptop at the end of the shoot so that no one would
be able to alter the results. Then the question of whether someone who
wanted to compete wouldn't be able to make it, or perhaps weather would
interfere - so discussion followed about doing it on two different
days. There was also discussion about the film shooter(s) turning in
their film to be processed to the person in charge of collecting images, so
that all of the same environmental and location issues would apply to them as
well. In an informal count, 7 said they would participate. No decisions
were made and the discussion will be continued. We were unable to load the digital projection software on the
laptop that was going to be used for the night’s competition, so the Digital
Projection competition had to be postponed.
We did a critical review of all the Color Slide and Nature Slide
submissions instead. |

News
from the March 13 GDCCC Board meeting: (See the Board Meeting notes at www.gdccc.org for full details.) ·
Proposal #1 was rejected: “An image that is or has been successful in
any division … becomes ineligible for future Council competition for any
other division…” ·
Proposal #2 was approved: “Because of declining participation, the 2¼
Slide Division will be discontinued.” …. But, another proposal was made to
have one “end-of-year” 2¼ slide competition per year with only one class that
would allow anyone who was interested to enter 5 slides. The new proposal will be voted on at the
April 25 Board meeting. ·
Proposal #3 was approved: “In cases where a proposal is made at a
board meeting and a decision needs to be made before the next regularly
scheduled board meeting, a “virtual” vote can be called for and approved by
the board members in attendance. …” ·
Proposal #4 was approved: “In cases where it’s important that a
decision be made at the next regularly scheduled board meeting, but the
necessary proposal was not made at the previous board meeting, a “virtual”
proposal can be emailed at least 2 weeks in advance…” PPS: ·
It was agreed that it’s not working to try to have all of the
competitions on the same night, so we will go back to alternating Print and
Slide/DPD Competitions starting in May (the banquet is April 3rd
and we judge GDCCC Nature Slides on April 17th) and try to have an
hour presentation on Print nights. ·
It was agreed to use the GDCCC DPD naming rules for PPS digital
entries. All images that are in
Advanced, Salon, Star and Galaxy classes will be put in the PPS advanced
class. Most of the GDCCC beginner
images will also be in the PPS beginner class, but it’s possible to have a
maker be in the GDCCC beginner class but in the PPS advanced class, so we’ll
have to watch for those images and make sure they get put in the right PPS class
on competition nights. Digital
Image file naming rules: ·
Do not use any special characters or periods in the
filename, except hyphen or underscore in the “Title of image” section of the
filename. Especially watch out for “/”
and “\” in dates and the “#” that’s often used for numbering. Those characters are used by the PC and the
digital projection software for special purposes and may cause the image file
to not be displayed. ·
All entries must contain the following information in the filename, separated by spaces: -
Division: o
“MG” for Monochrome General o
“CG” for Color General o
“NA” for Nature General -
GDCCC Class: o
“BE” for Beginner o
“AD” for Advanced o
“SA” for Salon o
“ST” for Star o
“GA” for Galaxy -

Proposal 1 passed: “Instead of holding 6 Interclub 2¼ Slide
Competitions per year, we will hold 1 competition as an end-of-year
competition. All entries will be in
the same class. The limit of 9
entrants per club per competition is removed.
Any member of any GDCCC club will be allowed up to 5 entries. Awards will be Slide-of-the-Year, 1st,
2nd, 3rd, and HMs equal to 25% of the total
entries. Trophies will be awarded for

GDCCC passed new DP rules. GDCCC Draft Proposal #1 -- Digital
Projection Nature (NA) as revised by
Joe Sroka: -
Any color digital image that contains "Nature", where
"Nature" is defined as, Nature in all its forms, including the many
facets of Botany, Geology, and Zoology. Human elements, if present,
should be unobtrusive and enhance the nature story. Those depicting
cultivated plants, domestic animals or pets, still-life studies, mounted
specimens, museum pieces or groupings, or similar subjects are NOT eligible.
The presence of scientific bands on wild animals is acceptable. Zoo shots and
Game Farm shots are eligible provided the artificial habitat is not apparent
in the image. Photographs of
artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, or
obviously set arrangements, are ineligible, as are some forms of manipulation
manual or digital (see below) that alters the truth of the photographic
statement. -
The photographer may perform enhancements and modifications that improve
the presentation of the image that could have been done at the time the image
was taken but that does not change the truth of the original nature story. -
Cropping and horizontal flipping (equivalent to reversing a slide),
straightening, keystone, noise removal, dodging and burning, exposure
adjustment, color balance, color correction, white balance, saturation, and
sharpening, “HDR” (High Dynamic Range), are examples of acceptable
modifications. -
Adding elements to your images, combining separate images or
rearranging and/or cloning elements in your image, removing major elements
from your image other than by cropping, are not acceptable and will lead to
disqualification of your image GDCCC Draft Proposal #2 -- Digital
Projection Color General (CG) as
revised by Joe Sroka: -
Any color digital image except those images in which a wild animal,
bird or insect fills more than one-third (1/3) of the frame and there are no
factors that prevent that image from being accepted in the Nature Digital
Projection Division. Those color digital images that are NOT acceptable
in the Nature Digital Projection Division may be acceptable as Color General
Digital Projection images. Some forms of manipulation (see below), manual or
digital, that alters the truth of the photographic statement are not allowed. -
